Anerood Jugnauth, the President of Mauritius, has said on the BBC that the country is prepared to leave the Commonwealth over the shameful treatment of the Chagos Islanders by the British government. The islanders were evicted from their homes in the sixties and seventies in order that the US could build its massive air base on Diego Garcia, one of the islands. The British government has lost several cases and has been required by the High Court to stop preventing their return. That decision is under appeal and a decision is expected shortly. If it goes against them we should assume that the government will just ignore it. After all they can't afford to piss off Uncle Sam!
