Fellow Pennsylvanian and chronicler of the Poconos (who didn't want to be Rabbit at least for a minute) John Updike has has died at the age of 76. No Nobel for him now.

A great man passes
The great writer and great American Louis "Studs" Terkel has died in Chicago at the age of 96. He will be missed.

So kudos are due to Irish author Anner Enright, whose novel The Gathering
has won the Booker prize against all odds. In addition to the £50,000 that comes with the award Ms. Enright can expect a significant uplift in sales as only 3,253 copies of her book had been sold previously.
