...but I told you so as concerns mount over a shortage of kosher meat after the recent immigration raid at an abattoir in Iowa. At least it's after Passover!

Isn't there a crime here?

The Washington Post carries a story about a legal Ghanaian US resident, Yusif Osman, who was taken into immigration custody over possible smuggling charges and then died when he was essentially refused medical care. If there isn't a crime, why not? If nothing else there is certainly criminal neglect of someone for whom the guard and the nurse had a duty of care.

If this were a real emergency...

...the US border patrol would still check your ID before allowing you to flee the storm. Nice.

When you have no shame you have no shame

Crooks and Liars has a clip from a 60 Minutes piece about the shameful conditions in which the US government "houses" asylum seekers and other immigrants.

I couldn't help but noticing that the government organisation that provides, or more often fails to provide, health care to these detainees goes by the moniker Department of Immigrant Health Services (DIHS). Funny how those discussing the lack of adequate care provided and their questioners keep spelling out the name as D-I-H-S rather than attempting to pronounce the acronym. I don't know about you but I would probably pronounce it, perhaps appropriately, as "DIES".

NEWS FLASH: Anti-Semitism at the INS

A mass raid by the US Immigration and Naturalization Service at the country's largest kosher meat packing plant in Iowa has resulted in between 300 and 600 arrests. Who knew so many rabbis were sneaking across the border under cover of darkness.

Where the hell are all of the kosher hot dogs necessary for a long, hot American summer going to come from now!

Perhaps He-With-the-Injection-Molded-Hair knew whereof he spoke when he put out his siren call for more (white) babies. It seems that almost 25% of American babies under the age of 5 are Hispanic. There is no word on their immigration status but I reckon most of them were in a hurry to crawl across the border before the fence got finished!

During debate on a guest worker bill in the Colorado state legislature Rep. Douglas Bruce (Do I Have to Tell You Which Party?) referred to Latin American farm labourers as "illiterate peasants". Ah for the good old days of feudalism. I can hardly wait for Rep. Bruce's efforts to re-introduce droit du seigneur!

Desperate Republican presidential hopeful Tom Tancredo has a new TV ad, which he clearly approves of, and it just has to be seen to be believed.

Gun lobby lauds Spitzer driver licence plan

In New York State Governor Eliot Spitzer has a plan that would allow undocumented workers to get special New York driver licences. Gun experts sought out by the New York Daily News claim that this will allow illegal immigrants to legally get their hands on guns.

Now I ask you what could be more American than that?
