In which I discuss what is no longer avoidable.

I have, until now, avoided mentioning the case of Madeleine McCann, the British toddler who went missing from her family's hotel room in Portugal over three months ago but now that it appears that the mother, Kate McCann, is to be officially made a suspect it is getting hard to ignore. Stories in the press indicate that blood from the young girl was found in a hire car rented by the parents nearly a month after the disappearance.

Ms. McCann was questioned for twelve hours yesterday and was due to return to talk to the Portuguese police this morning and her husband is to be interviewed this afternoon. Both parents have been prominent in the media since the disappearance and they have remained in Portugal. I certainly this line of enquiry turns out to be a false lead not just for the McCanns, if innocent, but for the families of any other children who go missing who will be treated with greater suspicion should the McCanns ultimately be proved to be involved.

For the moment the tabloids appear to be remaining behind the family and reporting rumours that Ms. McCann has been "set up" but if it goes further and there appears to be blood in the water I fear it will grow quite ugly indeed.

I suspected it was Mommy or Daddy or both from the beginning. Those are invariably the correct suspects, and, if not them, then at least a close relative or friend of the family. The story they told sounded utterly ridiculous.

The idea that the world is full of strangers out to grab your children is paranoid nonsense intended to cover up the fact that many parents and relatives are scum, that our society sucks, and that we really want to blame someone other than ourselves — preferably somebody brown — for our problems.

I may be proven wrong, but Mommy Dearest is the way to bet.
