And there will be a backlash

Led boldly by the United States the western world has decided that, rather than curb its obscene consumption of energy for transport, it can maintain its lifestyle and the planet by utilising "green" biofuels instead of oil. The only trouble is that we are having a difficult time producing sufficient food for the 6.5 billion people we have at the moment let alone the 9 billion we are likely to have in about 40 year's time. In fact we have produced less grain than we require in 6 of the past 7 years and this year's harvest is unlikely to generate a surplus. This means that food crops must compete with the west's Hummers, Beemers and Mercs and is already resulting in significant rises in food prices. The most vulnerable states will be those relying on food aid to survive because of war, flood or drought but even those of middling circumstance will feel the pinch over the next few years.

And remember hungry people are not happy people.
