I'm sorry but that's just not cricket!

Are there different rules in force when cricket is played in North America? When I think of cricket I think of a warm Sunday afternoon, lying in the shade of a great oak tree with a pint in my hand listening the the "thwack" of leather on willow whilst reading the Sunday papers.

I do not think of the sound of semi-automatic weapons fire. Devan Bascom, who is accused of shooting Francis Singh, after Mr. Singh allegedly threatened him with a cricket bat, which according to the Orange Country Police "is similar to a baseball bat but it's flat". Mr. Bascom is the holder of a concealed weapons permit and according to Sergeant Spike Hopkins "if fact, he was protecting himself, he was authorized by law to do so".

Remind me not to move to Florida - "The Shoot to Kill State" - anytime soon.
