Can either Senator Clinton or Senator McCain be more transparently cynical with their calls for a suspension of the Federal gasoline tax? Probably not but that won't keep them from fooling enough of the American electorate to make this absurd and dangerous proposal seem worthwhile. All credit to Senator Obama for calling them on it.
I have said it before and I shall probalby have to say it again; the price of petrol in America is substantially below that of anywhere else in the developed world and if an adjustment to the tax rate needs to be made it is that it be aggressively increased with any additional funds raised being spent on research into truly renewable energy sources and on public transport. Nothing, I repeat, nothing should be done by the US government to encourage the continuation of America's obscene and profligate energy consumption.
