"Psst. Buddy, wanna but an ashtray cheap?"

Well it has happened. England and Wales are now officially smoke free places; in public and indoors anyway. I imagine somewhere David Hockney is grumping up a storm.

This does raise a question however. What are they doing with all the ashtrays? According to industry figures there are around 58,000 pubs in the UK. If assume 85% of these to be in England and Wales that comes to just under 50,000. Your average pub must have had at least 40 ashtrays which would mean that pubs alone now have somewhere around 2 million excess ashtrays. That doesn't include however many are now surplus to requirements in cafes, clubs and restaurants. Are they recyclable? Can they be converted into something useful? Perhaps Blue Peter could help up us with this. I am sure that the Palace of Westminster, aka the Parliament building, has enough already for the smokers who are still allowed to light up there.
