According to the first study of its kind, carried out by US government's Centers for Disease Control show that 2% of American infants are suffering from abuse or neglect. Most of the cases, in some children as young as two weeks, related to neglect rather than physical abuse and there appears to be a correlation with drug abuse amongst mothers.
Perhaps we could all agree that this is a real problem we should address and that improved access to family planning services, including contraception, as well as drug treatment programmes and parental education all are needed to address this terrible and shameful pattern!
