The chief of the Metropolitan Police, Sir Ian Blair, has announced that he is stepping back from any involvement in the investigation of the "cash for peerages" scandal which could yet engulf both the government (up to and including the Prime Minister) and the Tories. He has taken the steps to avoid any appearance of a conflict of interest due to his close relationship with Tony Blair.
