About the only thing that pleases me about the tentative result of the Nicaraguan presidential election is that it will piss off Bush&co. Early results suggest that Daniel Ortega will garner sufficient support to win in the first round and avoid a two candidate run off that he would almost certainly lose.
There is a lot to dislike about the "new" Ortega. He has embraced the Catholic church and supports the total abortion ban approved by the parliament recently. The accusations of child abuse and general misogyny raised years ago have never been adequately addressed.
There is a lesson to be learned from the failure of the opposition though. When potential allies turn on each other (think Nader in 2000) in a quest for power it is likely that the other side wins even through together you would have had a majority of the electorate behind you.
The US reaction? Let's threaten sanctions as a punishment to the electorate for voting incorrectly.
