The Roman Catholic Church in Scotland has reacted angrily to Gordon Brown's not having included a repeal of the Settlement Act of 1701 amongst his proposals for constitutional reform. For those of you outside of the UK, or even possibly within its borders, who are unfamiliar with the law it prohibits the monarch from being or marrying a member of any religious sect other than the Church of England. The act specifically targeted Roman Catholics.
