I imagine that the nuclear energy industry will do everything in its power to ensure that genpatsu-shinsai doesn't become part of the everyday lexicon. The phrase is the brainchild of Katsuhiko Ishibashi, Japan’s leading seismologist and one of the Government’s top advisers on nuclear-quake safety and is a combination of the Japanese words for nuclear power and quake disaster. Mr. Ishibashi believes that Japan came closer to experiencing such a event earlier this week with the quake that damaged the nuclear reactor at Niigata. The 6.8 magnitude tremor was three times more severe than the plant was designed to survive and worse than the designers ever imagined possible. A similar event near the nuclear plant at Hamaoka, built on an active fault line and around 100 km outside of Tokyo could leave over 20 million victims in its wake.
