Mothers in court over Iraq enquiry

The mothers of two British soldiers who have died in Iraq have joined the chorus of voices calling for an independent enquiry into the legality of the invasion and the prosecution of the war. Rose Gentle and Beverley Clarke both lost nineteen year old sons in the war and want to understand why. Their case is currently before the Court of appeal.

The government continues to distance themselves from these calls after narrowly "winning" a vote in Parliament. Shortly after the vote the Defence Minister, Des Browne, said that "When the time is right, of course there will be such an inquiry". Number 10 downplayed suggesting that Mr. Browne was misinterpreted. I don't see much margin for interpretation in those remarks but then I am just a simple prole.

In any case it is almost certain that there will be no inquiry while Tony Blair is still PM and, if he had his way, while he is still alive.
