You could say that the Taliban started it all with the wanton destruction of the 1500 year old Buddhas in the Bamiyan Valley in Afghanistan. However the 2003 illegal invasion of Iraq by the US and its allies brought a new wave of destruction to the archaeological heritage of the Middle East. It now appears likely that any air assault by the Americans, or the Israelis, on Iranian nuclear sites could have a devastating
effect on the ancient sites there.

Perhaps the neocons have simply misinterpreted Fukuyama's premise.
