Yet another sad case, yet another bad headline

Going for the emotive and factually incorrect (but then they're owned by Murdoch) the Times chooses the headline "IVF woman loses her last fight over ex-lover’s baby" for a story about a case decided yesterday at the European Court of Human Rights. In the case, which has been working its way through the British and European system for some time, Ms. Natallie Evans has lost her fight to use embryos (not "baby"!) created with her former partner to have a child without his consent. British law requires the consent of both partners before implantation may take place.

Ms. Evans has had cancer treatment since the embryos were created and is now infertile. Clearly the case is agonising and it is hard to see a winner here but I believe that, in general, the court has got the balance correct.

Her former partner, Howard Johnston, has acknowledged that he probably looks the villain in the case but put his case simply. He has said "one of my principles has always been that I want to choose with whom to have a family". Hard to argue with.
