To live or to drive? That is the question

A report commissioned by the Organisation for Economic Development notes that increased demand for biofuels will drive prices of staples foods upwards. The rapidly growing demand for the so-called "green fuels" to fill up inefficient private transport in the West, in addition to tightening of markets driven by widespread droughts and reductions in grain stockpiles will mean that costs in third world countries could rise by as much as 6% in real terms.

Now I know those of you in America will think that 6% doesn't sound like a lot given the dramatic increases you have already had to swallow in the cost of filling up the Tahoe so you can drive a half mile to buy a newspaper, or more absurdly to drive to the park to go for a run, but you probably ought to consider that 6% is probably not affordable to those who already strain to feed their families. We are talking about basic survival here and not your bloody convenience.
