Oh, how the God loving gun nuts are coming out of the woodwork after this past weekend's tragedy in Colorado. Somehow they seem to be able to find justification for the taking of life in the New Testament. Whilst using the brutal and obscene violence of the Old Testament as cover for acts of war as well as acts by individuals it is fairly unusual, in not unprecedented, to parse the language of Jesus to justify the use of violence. That will not stop Larry Pratt however. Key quote, in which Pratt (what an appropriate surname, eh?) explains Jesus's rebuke of Peter for using a sword:
"It wasn't that Peter had a sword, or even [that he] was prepared to use it...It's that he was going to use it at, arguably, maybe the one time when it would have been completely inappropriate to defend life." (Emphasis mine.)
