Hair shirts went out of fashion in the 16th century and haven't been heard of since except, perhaps, in a few of the odder sexual establishments in large European cities. So what does a good Catholic, and Opus Dei member, do when she requires a bit of pain so that she doesn't forget about her Lord and Master or God for that matter? According to Italian Senator Paola Binetti the fashionable thing to do would be to don a cilice, a studded metal garter that is worn around the thigh (bare or stockinged) and which chafes and pricks the wearer's skin. Franco Grillini, a fellow legislator and gay rights activist, has suggested that she is guilty of sado-masochistic behaviour and should resign. I guess we will have to wait for Jerry Falwell to adjudicate the matter.
I eagerly await reports of as to what Ruth Kelly, a fellow Opus Dei devotée and British cabinet member, is wearing under those sensible business suits of hers.
