The Egyptian government has banned demonstrations against proposed amendments to the country's constitution that many consider undemocratic and designed to ensure that Hosni Mubarak's party retains a grip on power. At roughly the same time the US government announces that it sees "trend toward greater openness" in Egyptian governmental affairs. In defense of the US government, and trust me when I say that this does not come naturally, let me say that they do mildly criticise the proposed amendments.
