The hatchet man in the case of the seven sacked US Attorneys, Michael A. Battle, has resigned from his post as the director of the Executive Office for United States Attorneys in a move that he says is "unrelated to the dismissals". The firings are controversial as they allow the Bush administration to avoid Congressional oversight on new appointments by taking advantage of a little known Patriot Act provision. Congressional hearings into the dismissals are underway.
