Science and the all-American starvation diet

Breaking with his ostensible boss, George W. Bush, the head of the American National Institutes of Health, Elias Zerhouni, has loudly protested the US government's attempts to strangle stem cell research. Saying that arguments that the limited stem cell lines to which US government funded researchers have access are sufficient "do not hold scientific water" he added that "it is in the best interest of our scientists, our science, our country that we find ways—that the nation finds a way—to allow the science to go full speed on both adult and embryonic stem cell research."

At the same time no less illustrious a publication than the Scientific American is wondering on one of its blogs whether "The U.S. [Is] Trying to Deliberately Cede its Lead in Biomedical Research? Good question and one that deserves answering.
