Of Johnny Appleseed and climate change

Carbon offsetting is the latest and most popular means that we in the Western world are using to alleviate our "green guilt" caused by our profligate life styles. Even the sainted Al Gore does it. We hope of course that this means that we can go without sacrificing our Hummers, our air conditioning and our cheap holiday flights. These schemes often are based on the planting of trees that will, in theory, soak up all the CO2 we are responsible for at little or no cost to our comfort and ease.

Just to remind us that there is indeed no such thing as a free lunch comes the news that the some of these schemes may have little or no impact and some, which involve the indiscriminate planting of trees in Northern climes, may actually have a negative impact.

If we are really serious about this we would probably be better off ditching the cars and using public transport, insulating the flat, turning off the air con and taking the train on holiday.

Anyone who truly believes that we will be able to alter the tide of change without some sacrifice has been spending too much time listening to the Decider(TM), watching Faux News or works for ExxonMobil.
