Europe needs to take a stand against the unilateral, arbitrary , destructive and probably illegal American embargo of Cuba. It is one thing when the US imposes the restrictions within its own borders but when it exports it to countries who wish to have constructive and completely legitimate relationship with the Caribbean nation we must resist it. The latest incursion of the US law into Britain comes with the news that Barclays Bank has asked two Cuban enterprises, Havana International Bank and Cubanacam, to close their London accounts with the banking giant and take their business elsewhere. The accounts are believed to be in good standing and it is also nearly certain that Barclays' reasons for the move relate to fears over its significant business interests in the US.
In solidarity with my comrades in Cuba I am going to embargo the embargo. I shall start by going out and having a Cuba Libré made with Cuban rum and a fine Cuban cigar. As I am American citizen this is, believe it or not, a criminal act even here in London.
For those who are interested the United Nations is on my side in this.
