Just how far should free speech go?

I am usually a valiant defender of the free speech of others, including many whose thoughts and opinions I find abhorrent and vile, however I think that the line must be drawn at incitement to violence and I do not see how hanging a noose beneath a Confederate flag on a gallows in one's front yard is not an incitement to racial violence even thought 60 year old homeowner Michael Whiteaker claims his lawn ornament is simply a "conversation piece."

Maybe it is just me but I can't see it that way.
