Geneticist Craig Venter claims that he is on the brink of creating semi-artificial life. My opinion on this is basically the same as it is on genetic modification although it may be stronger. The technology has great promise but we proceed carefully with adequate testing of environmental and human impact and with strictly observed controls and protocols. The later are clearly missing in the US at least.
