Today is the twentieth anniversary of the Great Storm of 1987 but the Met Office is claiming that improved technology has made a repeat of its missed forecast impossible. The storm happened before I moved here but I was in the country on a business trip, I flew over the hurricane on my way home, and still recall Michael Fish's most famous moment when he said:
"Apparently a lady rang the BBC and said she heard that there was a hurricane on the way. Well, don't worry, if you're watching, there isn't."
In the true spirit of investigative journalism that permeates the tabloid press the Daily Mirror has found the woman in question.
Well it is good to know we shan't be surprised by the next one.
