Former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto returned to her country for the first time in eight years yesterday and was given a rapturous welcome at the airport. However as her procession proceeded through Karachi it was attacked by two suicide car bombs that have killed more than 130 people. Ms. Bhutto was unharmed in the attack on her bus. She claims that agents of former dictator General Zia-ul-Haq for the attack but many other sources believe that Islamic forces were responsible.
Nonetheless the US insists that this bold experiment in democracy continue and that Ms. Bhutto and current President General Pervez "The General" Musharraf should cooperate and form a government friendly to American interests irrespective of the will of the Pakistani people. Ms. Bhutto has said that, should she become Prime Minister, she would allow American attacks against Islamic forces on Pakistani soil.
