You can lead a firm to water

Forty years ago the British government made a deal with the, then public, water companies that allows them to extract virtually unlimited amounts of water from British with no compensation to owners, aka the British people. With many areas of Britain now suffering from prolonged drought the government is looking to restrict the water that the privatised companies may take.

How are the water companies reacting to this? They are to seek hundreds of millions of pounds in compensation. Based on the agreement with the government they are allowed to seek compensation if they have to develop alternative sources.

So how much compensation should they get for something that they do not pay for and then are allowed to charge the real owners for? According to an article in yesterday's Independent they are going to "demand £2m for each million litres they are banned from taking". Even those who are not good at maths should be able to work out that comes to two pounds a litre. For that they can just go down to Tesco’s and we can all take our baths in Perrier!
