A coalition of religious groups is behind a high pressure effort to scupper government attempts to enshrine gay rights in British law. The proposed rules would prohibit discrimination against gays in employment and provision of public services and would, for instance, prevent hotels from refusing to rent a room to a gay couple. The church groups want to be able to continue to discriminate based on religious grounds.
Unfortunately their efforts may prove successful as the bill is in the hands of Communities minister Ruth Kelly which is a zealous Catholic and member of the elitist and secretive conservative Catholic group Opus Dei.
