Scientists believe that they are getting close to developing a brain scan which would be capable of determining a persons intentions. Should this actually come to pass there are lots of ethical issues that will have to be addressed. Will this lead to, à la Minority Report, an offence of future crime with the police arresting folks for intending to commit crimes?
The most obvious use for this would to ensure that no politician speaks to the public without being wired up so that we will be aware when they intend to lie to the people in order, to imagine a far fetched circumstance, to lead them into war. Even if the technique were available today it would probably be of little use with his Imperial Majesty George the First as the current process requires that scientists have "a good idea of what a person's brain activity looks like". Would we, in his case be able to detect any activity at all?
