Despite assurances in a government white paper the Ministry of Defence is secretly working to upgrade the existing nuclear arsenal to make it more "effective", aka usable, including the ability to explode a weapon with reduced nuclear fallout. At the same time it is increasingly evident that the only way that proposals to replace Trident will get through the Commons is with the support of the Tories as a record number of backbenchers, including a number of recent frontbenchers, look to defy Tony Blair and vote against the new generation of weapons.
