After seventeen years in a Texas prison after being given a life sentence for smoking a joint whilst on probation for armed robbery Tyrone Brown is a (provisionally) free man. He has been a given a conditional pardon by the governor of Texas. It is a good thing for him that George W. Bush is now engaged elsewhere or I reckon he'd still be in prison this morning.
Mr. Brown, now 34, will have to live with his mother, see a therapist and report to a parole officer. Mr. Brown, an Afro-American, was given the live sentence by Judge Keith Dean (now ex-Judge Dean). In another case Judge Dean sentenced John Alexander Wood, a well connected white man, to probation for murder. After he tested positive for cocaine whilst on probation Judge Dean did not revoke his parole but allowed him to go into a drug treatment centre and to report to his parole officer by post.
