Unless you read the fine print you might think that a bill soon to be before the Utah state legislature was just a case of the state standardising rules for school based clubs. Needless to say you would be wrong. The bill is actually an attempt, under the cover of darkness, to find a way to ban gay-straight alliance clubs at schools. Such clubs have protection under the 1984 Federal Equal Access Act. The 1984 act was actually intended to protect bible study and other religious clubs from us scary secular humanists and other evildoers.
The Utah bill gives local school boards the rights to ensure that "the boundaries of socially appropriate behavior" are not breached by clubs and specifically bars any discussion of "human sexuality". That will be the end of all male (and probably most female) sports teams that operate under the aegis of school clubs then.
