The Italian Mafia seems to be branching out from its traditional product line of extortion, racketeering and general violence into the lucrative sideline of cheesenapping. Criminal gangs head up into the North from their southern homes and hijack lorries full of Parmesan cheese, cutting it up and flogging it through corner shops.
Buried elsewhere in the story is the somewhat surprising news that the average Italian family goes through a half a kilo of the stuff of week. For the Americans in the audience the stuff one gets in Italy should in no way be confused with the horrible petrochemical derivative sold in the states by Kraft foods!
