The Labour Party sold its old headquarters this year. In order to do so they set up a fictitious company as the owner of the building and sold the company. This means that they avoided of £200,000 in stamp duty on the transaction.
So far fair enough. However it just so happens that this is a practice that the Chancellor condemned in his pre-budget statement this past week and against which he plans to bring in legislation.
