"Welcome to Poland. We hope you don't enjoy your stay."

The former director of Szymany airport in north eastern Poland has come forward with information about its role in the process of "extraordinary rendition". Mariola Przewlocka has stated that the airport was used on numerous occasions by US military flights which often emanated from or continued on to Afghanistan or Guantánamo. The flights often stayed on the ground for only a short time, sometimes under an hour, and were generally met by vehicles from the nearby Polish military base at Stare Kiejkuty which is believed to house an American secret detention centre. Ms. Przewlocka was operating under strict instructions never to refuse a flight, she once had to authorise a landing in a fierce snow storm and on another occasion had to accept a Boeing 767 which was too large for the facilities, and never to approach the aircraft.

Of course I have no doubt that all of these flights were operated under strict adherence to American, Polish and international laws.
