In our struggle against global warming* there are many large adjustments and sacrifices that we will have to make. Nonetheless there are many small things which, if attempted by all of us, will make considerable contributions as well.
I already try to do my best; no electrical gadgets on standby, low energy light bulbs, relying on public transport, purchasing local fruit & veg, scorning imported lagers and drinking only Kentish ales (Spitfire where available) etc, etc.
However of late I have been noticing how often ordinary people seem to walk out of their way to use an automatic, electrically powered door rather than trouble themselves to push or pull a manual door open. It doesn't bother me if this someone if has their arms full of shopping, have a child in a push chair or is elderly or infirm. That's what automatic doors are there for. It's the young to middle aged people carrying nothing more than a brief case, handbag or rucksack who ought to know better.
Now all I need if for some young boffin to work out how much electricity we would save if everyone in the UK used a manually door instead of an electric one at least once a day. I am assuming that we will save enough to power a town the size of Wakefield (assuming electrification has made to Yorkshire) or some such.
So get calculating.
*Note: at the behest of my leader, his Imperial Majesty Emperor George the First, "The Decider", of North America, all the known world, the Moon and Mars I have removed two words from this post which he feels lack scientific basis and are emotive and inflammatory as well. For those of you who can't suss what the missing words are they refer to a large lump of rock orbiting a medium sized star towards the edge of the Milky Way galaxy and to the propensity that certain of the carbon based life-forms which inhabit this bit of rock to influence the ecosphere of their rock in a negative way cause temperatures to rise. (Or not according to my leader.)
