Hands across the water

Taking a leaf out of the old Sinn Féin playbook the New British National Party, their motto is compassionate racism and bigotry, are looking across the big water to their American brethren in order to raise money.

The Guardian reports that a fundraising organisation, ironically called Civil Liberty, that purports to be independent of the party is controlled by senior party officials and is raising money in the states and funnelling it all into the bank accounts of the BNP in an effort to circumvent party financing regulations. Seeking to take advantage of anti-Muslim sentiment in America it presents itself to potential American contributors as being in the "forefront of a campaign to save the UK from being 'overwhelmed' by Muslims".

Both the BNP and Civil Liberty deny the association with a BNP spokesman saying:

"Civil Liberty is completely independent of the party...The BNP receives absolutely no money at all from Civil Liberty and any allegation that [money is being diverted] to the BNP in order to circumvent election laws will be met by a libel writ."

Since the Guardian story alleges exactly that I can only assume that the libel writs will be raised forthwith. Updates when available.
