Jilted!

So Michael Bloomberg has left the Republican Party to become an Independent. Is this in preparation for a run at the White House and if it is what does it mean?

My assumption that he does plan to have a go at the Presidency. How serious he will take this effort remains to be seen.

If I am right and he does run does he have a chance to win? I think not. He has many things going against him at a national level. He is extremely wealthy. That will discourage some potential support. He is a North Easterner. That certainly didn't help Kerry. He is Jewish. This should not be an issue but there are large sections of the country where it will.

So if he cannot win what can he do? He will be a spoiler whose influence will be greatest in those medium to large swing states such as Ohio, Florida and Pennsylvania. Of these, in the last election two of the three went Republican.

I am not sure that it is a good thing if he runs. In my mind the only positive influence any third party (or non-party) candidate can have is to force issues onto the agenda and make the other candidates address them. I am not sure that he will be able to do this even if was what he wanted to do and I do not believe that this would be his objective.
