Despite predictions of a landslide the right wing Gaulist Party of French President Nicholas Sarkozy has won a much smaller majority than anticipated and in fact lost seats to the Socialists. Perhaps that VAT increase to pay for a corporate tax reduction wasn't such a great idea after all.
In other French news I bring you the sad news that failed Presidential candidate Ségolène Royal is to split from her long time partner Francois Holland who is also the head of the Socialist Party. I have just a word for Mme. Royal: should you be in need of a short break now that the election is over and are looking for an ever so slightly younger man to spend it with you might want to consider popping down to le Gare du Nord and catching a Eurostar. Ring me when you get to Waterloo.
