The Germans and the British appear to be ready to butt heads over the future direction for the European Union. Germany is insistent that the charter of fundamental rights be included in its entirety and legally enforceable whilst St. Tony would prefer a Chinese menu approach where countries, such as Britain and Poland, can pick and choose which portions they which to disregard. Unfortunately the imminent departure of St. Tony from Number 10 will not head off this conflict as it seems that this is one of the few remaining things on which the two New Labour heavyweights agree and the British position is unlikely to change in the next week or so.
