Alabama judge Herman Thomas, once considered for a federal judgeship by President Clinton, has resigned from the bench. Mr. Thomas was facing up to 30 ethics charges that, amongst more mundane corruption charges, included allegations that he "routinely checked young male inmates out of the Mobile County Metro Jail, taken them to an office at the courthouse at Government Plaza and spanked some of them with a paddle". Some of the corruption charges, those brought by the Judiciary Inquiry Commission, will probably be dropped as the most severe penalty provided are removal from office.
