In a move that is being hailed by health campaigners the British government is to raise the legal age to purchase tobacco products from sixteen to eighteen in October this year. This follows on the heels of the ban on smoking in workplaces and most public places (the bars in the Houses of Parliament are exempt for example) in July of this year. Despite smoking myself I don't see anything wrong with this move although one suspects that the enforcement of this age requirement (like the current one) will be haphazard at best. The greatest inconsistency is that the age of consent, both hetero and homosexual, for sex is and will remain sixteen. So you will be able to shag but not to have a fag after.
