Carbon offsets - good deed or license to pollute?

Carbon offsetting has become a favourite method of supposedly undoing the damage that you have done to the planet by giving a few quid to a firm that will plant trees that will, in theory, absorb the carbon dioxide that your travel, heating or whatever created.

Surprise! Surprise! It turns out that it is really not that simple and you are probably not doing any good at all.

So the capitalists are selling us what they claim are the means to assuage our liberal guilt without actually altering our lifestyle. Sorry. You are going to have to do it the hard way.

  • Cut out flights.
  • Ditch the SUV/MPV/petrol guzzler
  • Walk don't drive
  • Use public transport
  • Turn off the air con
  • Eat less meat
  • Eat local produce
  • Turn down the heat

I'm sure you know hat you need to do. It is just a matter of doing it. So this year instead of wasting your New Year's resolution on claiming that you will quit smoking/ / quite drinking / lose weight try pick two or three things from the list above (or other of your own chosing) and help save the planet.
