You calling me a liar, amigo?

The Washington Post reports today the US Attorney General and Bush succubus Antonio "Gone-zo" Gonzales may have told a little porky to a Federal judge when he sent a letter to U.S. District Chief Judge Donald W. Molloy of Billings Montana that told he that Montana US Attorney William W. Mercer "was not violating federal law by spending most of his time in Washington".

It turns out that he probably was as there was a residency requirement at the time. The requirement was dealt with on almost the same day that Gone-zo sent the letter to Judge Molloy as the Justice Department had a clause inserted into the (little read) Patriot Act reauthorisation that was pending at the time and subsequently passed.

There is, of course, no reason to believe that most powerful government lawyer in the country, the Attorney General, should be expected to either know the law or speak the truth about it if he does. Even if it could be reasonably expected, and I am not suggesting that it IS reasonable, for the AG to know the law and tell the truth it just cannot be expected that he should remember any of these things.

I'm glad that's sorted!
