J' accuse!

Why is the UN ineffective as an impartial mediator? Perhaps because the United States will not allow it to be one. The UN's Middle East envoy, Alvaro de Soto, is coming to the end of his secondment in Israel and has written an "End of Mission" report that savages the US and says that the country under the current administration has "pummelled into submission" any ability that the United Nations has to be seen as impartial.

For a long time I have accused the Bush administration of having done nothing in the Middle East over the past six and half years. I see I was wrong; unfortunately every thing that they have done has been destructive.

Just a note that might be of interest. This story, which broke early enough to make the print editions of today's papers here, seems to be getting little or no coverage in the US press. Why is that I wonder? Before you say it - Sr. de Soto is critical of the Palestinian leadership as well as the US and the Israeli. However the later two are negotiating from positions of strength and that is definitely not the case with the Palestinians; Hamas or no Hamas.
