Today's Independent reports that a number of Vatican experts believe that the Pope's recent statements are consistent with his beliefs and not misunderstood or taken out of context.
The article quotes Marco Politi, a Vatican writer at La Repubblica as saying "the debacle into which the Holy See has fallen...is much more than an accident of communication." Whereas John Paul II had gone out of his way to find common ground with Islam the Pope appears unlikely to follow that path.
As the leader of more than a billion Roman Catholics this speaks ill for relations between the church and the Muslim community as well as the that between the West in general and Islam.
