The Marines v the First Amendment

The United States Marine Corps is to take steps to "generally discharge" Cpl. Adam Kokesh, who is on the inactive reserve, for having the temerity to appear at an anti-war rally and speak out against the illegal war. He has been accused of misconduct and the Corps plans to give him what is a step below an honourable discharge.

I have no problem with the armed services having a policy that those on active duty are prohibited from political speech. The problem is that Cpl Kokesh is neither on active duty nor have there been any moves to punish the hundreds of active service officers who have appeared, in uniform, at political rallies, especially but not exclusively Republican ones, and who speak in support of the illegal invasion and occupation of Iraq.

What's good for the goose is good for the gander as they say.
