Whilst the Republicans argue over what constitutes torture in Britain the court martial of seven soldiers accused of war crimes for abusing Iraqi prisoners continues.
Yesterday the court heard that the colonel in charge of the men failed to prevent the acts from taking place. (Two of the accussed, in addition to colonel, are also officers.)
For the prosecution Julian Bevan QC said:

For the prosecution Julian Bevan QC said:
"As commanding officer, Col Mendonca had a duty towards all detainees held by soldiers under his command. One of those duties was to do all that might be expected of a reasonably capable and careful colonel to ensure that detainees were not ill-treated."
